He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalm 91:1-2

The story is told of a military unit that had numerous casualties in a time of war. When a new leader took charge, because he was a believer, he requested his men all memorize and quote Psalm 91. They did, and apparently, they began to trust in the many exceeding great and precious promises of deliverance in this well known psalm. Over the next four years of war, they did not lose one man.

Psalm 91 is not a refuge for the presumptuous, but it is a refuge for those seeking the Lord and finding life in the words for given situations. When the Spirit speaks through words of truth, faith comes by hearing His voice (Romans 10:17). Many have found deliverance through the truth of this amazing psalm.

The key is discovered in the very first statement, He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High. The secret place is the most high Himself. Not something other than God, but the Lord Himself. Therefore, the most high God is the worthy object of trust. When God is truly depended upon, He either delivers out of the trouble or delivers in the trouble. Either way, those who abide in Him may abide in the shadow of His protection.

In troubled times we must dwell in the secret place of God Himself.
