On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted The Declaration of Independence, declaring the thirteen American colonies free and independent of Great Britain. The rest is history. But nations and individuals would do well to adopt a “Declaration of Dependence.” Examples may be found in various Psalms.
Nationally
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. Psalm 20:7
This declaration by the psalmist David exemplifies national dependence on Almighty God.
Individually
I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalm 91:2
This declaration exemplifies individual dependence on Almighty God.
On this July 4, 2026, America’s 250th birthday, may we pray for our nation to trust in the Lord. But may we also cast our dependence on God in every way in our individual lives.
