A dear friend of ours in California, when reflecting on the goodness of God, often exclaims, “What a God!” Sometimes she doubles it saying, “What a God! What a God!” Many times my heart has been warmed by this expression.

The prophet Micah expands this kind of exclamation, “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:18-19).

These are glorious declarations about our God—the one true God. No other is like Him. Why?

God pardons iniquity—He forgives. When we get honest about our sin and turn to the Lord for deliverance, He releases us from what we owe and sends the debt away.

God offers mercy. What would we do without the mercy of God, which is new every morning? God rescues us from our miserable conditions as well as not giving us what we deserve.

God has compassion on us. He knows our frame. He remembers we are made of dust. He cares.

God overcomes our sins. He overcomes the penalty of our sins through Christ’s death for us and He overcomes the power of sin through Christ’s life in us.

Truly, who is a God like unto our God? What a God! What a God!
