One special dynamic constituting the aura of the Christmas season is the manifold display of Christmas lights. Decorations and lights enhance cities and towns. Small towns especially captivate those who pass through with wonderful light displays. Christmas lights in neighborhoods dazzle the passersby with sparkling displays. Many have a Christmas tree in their house lit up with colorful lights. Some churches have candlelight Christmas Eve services creating a visible glow of the invisible glory of Jesus, the reason for it all.
In a very real sense, Christmas lights with their mystique represent the Christmas light—Jesus. Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). The gospel writer John wrote, “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9). Jesus is the light of salvation to every one who believes.
But Jesus is not only the light to sinners, He is the light in saints. When sinners respond in faith to the saving light of Jesus, Jesus indwells them by His Spirit so they shine to others. Jesus said to His disciples, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Matthew 5:14). “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).
Jesus is the light of the world, and since Jesus indwells believers, saints are the light of the world. Spirit-filled believers let the light of Jesus shine. Are we a fitting light display? When we set their focus on Jesus, trusting Him to impart His life to us and through us to others, Christ, who is our life is manifested, and we are manifested with Him (by being the bearers of His light) in glory (Colossians 3:1-4).
May we this Christmas season, through the Spirit, be Christmas lights to those around us.
