“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:36-38).

How do we see the unsaved? Are they in our way? Do we look down on them? Or is there a supernatural perspective? Is there love?

When Jesus saw the multitudes He was moved with compassion for them  (Matt. 9:36). This same Jesus lives in us—and He still has compassion. As we take by faith the “not I, but Christ” reality, we experience His compassion for the lost. When this occurs the words of Jesus have deep meaning—the harvest truly is plentiful. Therefore, we must pray to the Lord of the harvest that He will lead us right to His harvest (Matt. 9:37-38). This way we are not just working in the fields, but reaping in His harvest.

The Spirit used this passage over thirty years ago to stir me to write the words to the following song.

When I look into the faces
Of people everywhere
Help me see lost souls in danger
And headed to despair.
Help me see the flame approaching
Around their fleeting days.
Those who die without the Savior
Are lost to hellfire’s blaze.

Help me win the lost
And see them in their need.
Help me win the lost,
Salvation’s cause to plead.
Help me win the lost,
O Spirit, please empow’r!
Help me win the lost,
O use me now this hour.

As I gaze into the future
And see the lost man’s doom,
Help me always to remember
There is an empty tomb!
Jesus died for ev’ry sinner;
He won the victory.
Jesus lives! He is the Savior.
Salvation’s offered free.

Help me win the lost
And see them in their need.
Help me win the lost
Salvation’s cause to plead.
Help me win the lost,
O Spirit, please empow’r
Help me win the lost.
O use me now this hour.
